site

sooo today was awesome! i got my site and im super excited about it. It was my number two choice. and its funny because i didn't orginally have it in my top five choices but then i decided that im never going to be able to live sort of off the grid again. So my site is a small village with 650 people. It doesn't have electricity (supposedly they are getting solar panels but who knows if that would happen in my two years). We supposedly will have digicel phone service in our house which is GREAT for me because those of you that know me know i have to keep in touch with everyone i love! Only downside is my current phone is GT&T so looks like ill be investing in a new phone..hopefully an internet phone! We also have flushing toilets in our house which is a big deal :). The BEST part is i get to live with another volunteer which is AWESOME. so ill have someone else to share this exciting/probably hard experience with. I'm going to try and get a solar panel if i can afford it too to charge my laptop for movies (duh) and my phone. I think we are the first volunteers in this site so im soooo excited to be able to start from the ground up and be their first impression as a volunteer..maybe ill get to do something totally amazing like start a library. I don't know maybe im over-estimating what i can handle but i really have a great feeling about this and i think this will be the hardest/most rewarding experience on my life so far. (It'll be interesting to read this blog after ive been there for a few months) I'm really surprising myself with how well ( i think) ive adjusted and just done things that i thought i would normally been afraid to do. sometimes it feels like an outerbody experience. Oh one thing im pretty sad about is that i wont be close to Jillian, Cassie and Annie ...love them (don't let it go to your heads!) but hopefully we'll stay in touch. I taught with Cassie at school yesterday..i guess i did okay its just weird because most of the strategies that we have learned from US classrooms don't work here or get lost in translation. I think i'd like to do more small group pull out stuff. Anyway gotta go before it gets dark. Man ima old lady lol.

Miss you all (if anyone reads this)

  1. Leighton,
I think what you're doing is great, but I know that you dad and nanny miss you beyond life itself. I will enjoy reading your post about your adventures. Take care of yourself and enjoy your time in Guyana.
